This post is a revisit to previous work on Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and re-focuses on the germane cognitive load aspect. Germane refers to the work put into creating a permanent store of knowledge, your long-term memory. The germane processes are a function of the learners cognitive resources available and, also are attributible to the learner’s motivation.

Germane load refers to the effort needed to use memory and intelligence to process information into schemas. Germane load is thus how we process new information into long-term memory.
