Durrant, M., Oliver, C., Gottlieb, L., Frechette, J., Lavoie-Tremblay, M., & Cyr, G. (2024). Facilitated engagement approach: A novel approach to guide mentor conversationsNurse Education Today, 106152.

Background

Mentorship has been recognized as a strategy to develop leadership competencies in clinical leaders and has been integrated into leadership programs.

“The mentor facilitates the development of a growth mindset by encouraging the mentee to see situations as challenges, by assisting them to question assumptions, and to seek learning opportunities that deepen their knowledge, cultivate their abilities and develop their strengths”

Aim

To provide a framework to guide mentor conversations with mentees training to assume nursing leadership roles.

Facilitated Engagement Approach

  • Mentors foster a growth mindset encouraging others to learn, develop and grow.
  • There is little research about mentors’ conversational frameworks.
  • Our mentor conversational framework, the FEA, is grounded in the Spiraling Approach, reflection and story-sharing elements. These were found to be useful to facilitate a deep understanding about SBNH leadership and foster leadership capabilities.
